    vpn problem

lately ive set up a vpn to access my personal files on my desktop from remote locations, and it worked fine, but...

when vpn is enabled, my file and printer sharing isn't working any more on my lan.
i can still connect using the vpn on the lan but that disables my internet connection and its a hassle when i can just use file and printer sharing.

i tried looking for info on the web but havent been able to find anything that is related to my problem.

now i think that vpn uses the same service/ports and file and printer sharing, but enables some sort of security or authentication.

am i correct on my assumption and is there a way to have both of these available at the same time.
i would like to avoid using third party software to solve this but if someone can suggest some good free/inexpensive software i am open to suggestion.
