Windows 98 will not load properly

It sounds like your assessment is that Win98 does not have the proper drivers? Why would I take out my controller cards for the graphics card modem etc...The win98 was working properly before and I have not changed anything out?

I just think that it is alot easier to take all the cards out before you install Win98. Then you can install each card one at a time instead of all at once.
You said that it keeps bootin into safe mode and that is most likely a driver problem. If you install each card one at a time then maybe you can tell which driver is causing the trouble.
If this don't help then keep postin cause I'm sure someone around here can help you get the problem solved.

You said that it runs win95 OK. Are you installing Win98 over Win95?

I have been running win98 for 4 mounths now. I do have the 98upgrade...But upon installing it after fdisking the HD I running into problems--its not booting all the way and, its not loading all the drivers, plus it always sends me to safe mode(which it never did before). It does run windows 95* w/o any problems. I have baffled the microsoft tech. team. I dont know what to do? it worked perfect now not at all. Heres my info: 266IIMMX cpu, Main Board 12/31/97-i440LX-2A69JB0DC-00
Bios: v4.51PG TLC1231P

Did you take out all your isa and pci cards (except vid card of course) before you installed Win98? Then you can install each card one at a time.

Yeah Im running win95 now--because win98 is not loading. I was running win98 prior to this NEW episode. It worked fine but now its not. So Ill do what you suggested if nothing well then flash the bios I guess... Thank you

You said Windows 98 ran fine for 4 months. I don't think that flashing the BIOS is the real answer to your problem. I would guess that somehow, you must have ran something that modified/change some drivers/setting. What have you done before the episodes started? Did you install something new?

Yes I did install Communicater 4.50, as well as power point 97 from microsoft. Upon deleting power point 97(because I did not need it) is when I ran into churping from the hard drive and not loading properly. The microsoft team suggested flashing the bios after fdisk and every thing else failed. So what now?????????????????

That's the problem!
When you uninstall a program, the uninstall wizard delete also the drivers used by that program. Some of them may by shared by other program which, after that doesn't work properly anymore and can crash the system.
Same thing happenes with some programs that hate each other...(don't laugh, it's true!), by using the same resources, thus entering in conflict.Try reinstall older programs or uninstall newer ones.

its probably to late to do this but next time it happens try a registry backup by booting into dos from a boot disk going to windows\command and typing scanreg /restore and pick a date of your last successful boot.

I had the same problem after uninstalling some of the Office package. I formatted my hard ddrive, reinstalled my software and it runs like a clock now. Good luck
