you can try a program like partition magic to safely remove the partition but I think you would have to delete the partiton and create a new one(fdisk it and create new primary DOS partition.)

    Hi,

I'm using NT4 with NTFS and now I want to go back to FAT. What is the easiest way?

Just get you a copy of partition magic and delete that partition, then use your regular DOS fdisk program to format back to fat.

if you have any ntfs drives in the extended partition, fdisk alone won't take care of it. if you do, i can point you to a good util.
