ad awre 6 pro? best spyware killer
i use adaware 6 free version but it does not prevent adware. if i buy the pro version it will, does anybody use it? If not what do you use or own I've tried spy sweep & spybot search & destroy, & zone alarm. found bugs or too much intrusion in them. reccomendations please.

If i were you i would use Spyware blaster and disable downloading 3rd party cookies in your browser(s) they'll do a similar job of preventing spyware in the first place, but cost you nothing

Zonealarm is a completely different type of utility to adaware/spybot.
For what its worth:
I use AdAware (free version) every 2-3 days
Spybot once every week (I really hate the interface)
Use Sygate Personal Firewall (www.sygate.com), also free like zonealarm, but it doesn't have any intensely annoying popup windows that sits on the screen for a minute when it starts, and it works much better.
I also use www.grc.com 's ms messenger popup killer and some of the other stuff there like un-PnP.
You can never be too careful on the net, just take a look at some of the sick and twisted people who visit this site!

I use PestPatrol V4 but V5 is coming out soon www.pestpatrol.com
I have found this to be the most robust malware etc scanner and remover that I have tested. However, a combination is required, e.g., prompt or block 3rd party cookies (this will limit some site access though), not installing freeware if it stipulates adware as a condition etc.
PP costs but the upgrade fee is 50 per cent of the next version available. The signatures remain updateable but the program itself is not.
I use Ad-Aware Pro V6.1.181 and it is ok too.
A firewall does not have anything to do with spyware and scumware prevention unless you use, for example, ZA Pro V4+ with web filtering settings.

i'm lookiing for something to install in computers that i build for others that will do itself. it's too much to ask for them to run the adaware 6 every couple days. last kid had to manually remove 600 spyware things. gettin tired of fixing them

Firefox and ad-aware 6 seem to work for me...only ever get any muck when I have to use MSN Messenger (IE based) I reckon basically...if you don't want hassle...don't use IE...the hackers love to target it, as they always have....Why bother??

I use Ad-aware and spybot. I had spyblaster and spyblocker but there not needed. I also use Norton and and Firefox. I never have any popups, or any problems.

CrapyKing:
The biggest Spyware magnet is Internet Explorer.
If you want to prevent most spyware from getting into your system, simply stop using Internet Explorer and use a different browser. Since Microsoft and Internet Explorer have the largest share of the browser market, most spyware is set to take advantage of security wholes and flaws in Internet Explorer. When I was using IE I got on the average 5-7 pieces of spyware every two days. After changing to Mozilla it has gone down to 1 or 2 a month.
Some people may say that there are some sites that only work with Internet Explorer. I have encountered a few sites that require IE. The primary site being, www.microsoft.com. I use IE for the Microsoft website and the few others I encounter, for everything else I use Mozilla.
Spybot Search and Destroy is probably Adaware's main competition and Spybot has an "imunize" feature to plug IE security holes. I suggest you apply the immunize if you are going to continue using IE.

Recent updates cause the "immunize" feature in Spybot to block the excite.com site - a bummer if you're using their free email service.
Other than that, Ad Aware & Spybot do a pretty good job for freeware.
Another one that seems to catch **** that the others don't is:

Hail to the Victors
Spbot Beta 1.3 weekly
Ad Aware 6 weekly
Sygate firewall
Norton 2004. I've got until Feb 2005 till this runs out...I might choose a free alternative AV after this...but, Norton's always been my buddy...even after I uninstalled Internet Security...
If things really get nasty...
CWS Shredder and HiJackThis.

I agree with HaroldW about using a different browser. For most users it will greatly reduce all the crud. I prefer IE based browsers myself so I just control the scripts that are used to install the ****.
I use The Proxomitron to control every aspect of a web page. I block web bugs, trackers of any sort, offsite js, block web tracking in cookies, fake referrer info, spoof my info, disable malicious code, etc. etc. I don't see ads or pop-ups. I use spywareblaster, mrublaster and emptemp2. I use IE and IE based browsers and sometimes Firefox.
I run spybot and adaware occasionally but they never find anything on any of my pc's.

spyware
Best way to combat spyware is to use a combination of softwares.
Certain spyware is imune or doesen't getpicked up by certain anti spyware programs
To make a long story short - your best bet in my opinion is to use both Lavasofts Adaware and Spybot.
remember to update regularly
PS.
Adware pro has adwatch - configureable control on reg edits and settings changes that sapyware ususally makes without you knowing it.
Worth its weight in gold

I like adaware its removed around 200 cases of spyware. so it seems to be doing the job. I recently cleaned out my step moms computer it found 500 cases of spyware. So i think it does a pretty nice job.
