SATA on A7n8x using EXISTING XP

I have looked and looked and cant seem to find anyone with a similar problem...
I have a current installation of XP on an IDE drive - and merely wish to add a SATA drive. XP comes up and sees that there is new hardware (raid controller) - and prompts for the drivers.

Here is the problem: when I point it to the Silicon Image drivers (I've tried everything from 1.0.0.22 to 1.0.0.40) it acts like it is going well until it comes up with the following message:
Cannot Install this Hardware. An error occurred during the installation of the device. The system cannot find the file specified.

Has anyone else run into this?

It gives you no indication of the file name?

Inside the folder where you extract the files from the Zip, there is a GIU folder. Have you tried running the "InstallSATARaid.exe" file there?

Anyway, here are the README instructions:

    1. Click Windows [Start], then move the mouse to stay on [Settings].

    2. Click [Control Panel].

    3. Double Click [System].

    4. Click [Hardware] tab.

    5. Click [Device Manager].

    6. Right Click [RAID CONTROLLER] under [Other Devices], then click [Properties].

    7. Click [Driver] tab.

    8. Click [Update Driver].

    9. Choose [Install from a list or specific location].

    10. Click [Next].

    11. Choose [Include this location in the search].

    12. Click [Browse] to specify the file path where the driver is,

e.g. "X:\Drivers\Si3112"( X is the drive you put the support CD).

    13. Click [Next].

    14. Click [Finish].

No, it just gives me that vague error message.

And yes, I tried installing the files from the GUI folder first and everything.

I feel like I've poked and prodded this thing every possible way.

Has anyone actually gotten sata working on an EXISTING install?

    Thank you for any suggestions!!

If you're not looking to install the OS on the SATA drive, just go to Windows Updates.
They have an updated Silicon Image Sil 3112 driver for it....

You DO have it enabled in BIOS, right?
In otherwords...the jumper is in the correct position, and you see the SATA/RAID controller BIOS before booting up, correct??

    Yes here!

I always install windows and get it up and running before hooking up my SATA drive with my backed up files on it! Just in case of an unintentional format of "my precious" material.

Never had an issue installing it either, maybe you have a bad drive???

Next time it prompts for new drivers, cancel the prompt and install manually as BPB said.

    Thanks for the replies.

The thing that is wierd is even though it comes up and shows that the driver for the raid controller is not functioning properly (an exclamation mark on the controller in DeviceManager) - at that point I can see and access the hard drive. I was able to format it and transfer files off and on, etc.

It is just every time I reboot - it wants to install the driver for the raid controller because it never finishes correctly.

I have tried letting it find it automatically, using the windows update, installing manually - they all come back with the same error: "The system cannot find the file specified"

Is there a way to force the drivers in without using the AddHardware utility?

    Thanks again for any thoughts!!
