On-board audio driver (SoundMax) problem

Hello,

Previously when using Win98 SE, I can play audio CDs. After installing an upgrade to Win XP, no sound heard from my speakers.

My Motherboard is Intel D865PERL. I tried loading the latest drivers from Intel website but still can't solve this problem.

Can someone help ?

Try uninstalling the old drivers. Then remove the device in the device Manager and restart the machine. The computer will find new hardware then you can point it to the XP driver you downloaded.

Did you "browse" or let Windows search for the drivers or did you run the setup program?

I can browse but no drivers can be selected because the drivers are not organised into folders like Win9XX, WinMe or Win XP.

So I have no choice but to use the setup program provided.

That's what you should have done - run the setup.

Did you change anything in the case when you upgraded to XP? Example: Hardware upgrade?

Maybe your CD to Sound Card cable is loose or not plugged in. I have that board and I have sound from CD's. I am using the driver that came with the motherboard. I ran the setup application and have never had a problem.

Check in Systenm > Device Manager to see if the sound/multimedia controllers have any problems highlighted. Download the SoundMAX drivers from ASUS website and reinstall.

I did not change anything during the XP upgrade.

It's unlikely that loose cables are the cause of this problem because when I reformatted my hard disk again and re-installed WIN 98SE, everything works OK.

After the XP upgrade, I also observed that the default CD player (not the fanciful Win Media player) could not detect any CD being loaded whereas the Win Media player can detect CDs (I can see track numbers) but play no sounds.

As for the suggestion for downloading SoundMax drivers from Asus website, I will try to see whether it works. But I'm using Intel mobo though.
