    Outlook 2002 problem - strange

Ok we have ten workstations one server all running windows 2000 / 2000 advanced server. MS Office is deployed to the ten workstations. 9 of the ten workstations work perfectly. The one is having problems with Outlook 2002. When that person receives email with any kind of attachment not only .exe, .zip it can be any attachment .doc, .html what ever outlook stops responding when you try to view that email. You have to ctrl + Alt + del and close outlook but you still can not open that email.

    Things I tried:
    1. edited the registry to include .doc, .html and excel documents.
    2. uninstall and redeploy
    3. used help's detect and repair
    4. checked for viurs
    5. complete reformat of hard drive and reinstall
    6. install sp1 and redeploy

Nothing seems to work. Any other suggestions here. Again it can be any attachement and this is only happening to one workstation.

    Thanks.

Are you using Word as your email editor?

    There's a start.

I see you service packed...but, did you service pack windows, or office?
The current service pack for office 2K is 2...me thinks.
    Sorry...make that service release 3.

Are you using an exchange server, POP email, etc?

    Thanks for the quick reply.

    1. All service packs for windows is installed on all machines.
    2. SP1 installed for office xp
    3. we do use word as the email editor
    4. we use a pop3 email

There is only one machine that currently has this problem. Only three people use outlook for their emails and the others use outlook express.

AntiVirus scanning software can cause this when set to scan attachments. Normally, just give it a few minutes to complete and the attachment will open. If you have the server and the workstation scanning attachments, they could be competing for access to the attachemens. Try disabling antivirus software temporarily and see if the problem remains.

No, I disabled norton AV 2002 and outlook will still hang/freeze on the attachment.

Now I notice that when I reinstall it will work for a little while then **** out. Something is triggering it, but I don't know what it is.

I ran spybot today and came up clean.

I reinstalled again today and seems to be working again. I also disabled symantec winfax automatic start-up. The only thing that starts with windows now is Norton AV 2002.

Winfax has an option to view it's folders within outlook...
So...you might have hit it there, somewhere...
