    CD-RW Drive suspicoous..malfuntion??

I have this problem ..which really irks me( like all of our problems do ) as to why my CD-RW..checks out as ok in the control panel..but will not read or write when I try to burn something..using the newly downloaded Nero 6 writer..
This also happens when I use the windows burn process..

This was one of hte reasons I did a system restore about two days ago and everything checked out fine after a earlier restore point and it seems strange that after installing the new Nero 6.. it only keeps saying to install a CD-R and that nothing is reading..when I load the empty disk...

I noticed on one of the main option settings that it is stuck on erase..with no other option available....I have checked the drivers for windows and the Nero drivers and they are both OK and installed....

Could it be a conflict with the drivers already in my CD-RW files??...and the new loaded Nero 6 drivers....

Every aspect of the program works and looks good..except the most needed aspect...

Also, my settngs in my admin tools are all on and running....

Now ..when I put in any disk..it fails to read or come up in the My Computer..for that drive....I open it and it is blank..and says to insert the media ( CD-R ) in the CD-RW unit...

This CD-RW is a Samsung..about three years old and I have never had problems with it.reading and or burning before....

Note: I should mention that after doing a speed test ( included with the software ) there was a read error message....

I would replace the drive or clean it.

i guess this is the reason I need to go ahead and get that DVD-RW-CD-RW player i was going to get next....

I have done a system restore ...and it at least read ok then....then somehow it just returned to this state...but only after installing the Nero program....strange as I don't think nero 6 is the problem..just looking at how fluidly everything comes up and works on the menus for it..ect...

Cleaning it..could be the problem..but again I am suspect about whether this could suddenly restore all to its original op. condition

I keep thinking there is some certain setting turned off or not set right to make this happen??

Thanks..you may be right!.....its three years old and has taken alot of abuse...the laser may be caputt!

I'd just go back to using whatever older version of Nero I had before upgrading.

Also, if you're using a pirated copy of Nero, it won't recognize your burner without a legit serial number.
