Not Booting
System Specs:
Hewlett Packard
Celeron 500mhz
64MB Ram
Win98SE
Not sure of the size of HD
Installed "Asound" sound card and game controller. After installation of the drivers the system said I didn't have enough IRQ's for everything. It asked which if any IRQ I wanted to use for the game controller. I told it to use IRQ 7. I then had to restart the machine. On restart the computer hangs on the windows 98 splash screen. I am able to boot in safe mode and if I take out the sound card. I tried uninstalling the sound card and rebooting but still the computer hangs.
I need help on this one guys. What do I need to do to get the card uninstalled and reinstalled?

Go into safe mode and "remove" the soundcard from the device manager. I would then take the card out of the m/b and reboot.

Reboot and press F8 after POST. Select Command Prompt Only. Type in SCANREG /RESTORE and then choose a version of the registry from before the mess-up.
Are you just trying to add a game controller or are you replacing the sound system? If the motherboard has built-in sound, you need to disable it or choose a different address for the MIDI port in BIOS setup - at least.
Never choose IRQ 7 for anything but a printer.

thxmanu, I did what you suggested last night. It booted fine until I put the card back in. Then it freezes at the windows splash screen again.
BipolarBill, I will do the scanreg /restore when I get home. The sound card has a game controler as well. There isn't any onboard memory. The system had a sound card that connected to a modem. The card went bad so the gentleman was out both a modem and sound.
Thanks guys.

IRQ7 is reserved for LPT1.
you remembered to remove the old sound card drivers and software before you installed the new one, right? did you go into safe mode to make sure all the old stuff was removed?
5 would be ok for the sound card. Try IRQ 10 or 11 too.
try different pci slots too.

IRQ 5 is used for sound in DOS only.
How old is this card? Are you sure that the drivers are the correct ones?

Bill, the card is an Asound Express II 2002. The drivers are for windows 95\98.
Below is the batch file I was talking about in earlier post. I did some more playing around and come to find out the card doesn't work even when I leave the file below and step past it to boot in normal mode.
What do you think Bill, should I tell him to get a different sound card or am I not doing something right?

Good luck Sabbath. FYI, I like to keep to the name brand components. Issues like this one are exactly the reason!
