Windows Update AMD Drivers, what should I do?
Hi,
Normally I run windows update quite regulary and install the new updates but I came across this one a few days ago and am not sure if I should install it or not:
Advanced Micro Devices processor software update released on August 29 2001.
Download size: 31 KB, < 1 minute
Normally I would download it, but it has never come up before and since it is dated August 29 2001, i'm not sure if I should install it or not.
So can someone help me out here and tell me whether I should install this update or just ignore it.
By the way I have an AMD Duron 1200.
Thanks,
Michael

All that update is for is so that Windows can properly identify the CPU in System Information. It's safe.

You didn't say which version of windows your running.
XP won't show it as an update. XP already has it. Not sure about 2k. 98 (se) will show it as an update.

I'm running XP and I saw it up there too. The thing that worried me about it is there's not description of what it does, and I don't install something unless I know what it does. That's just tacky of them I think. It's never been up there before, until just the other day.
What exactly is it's purpose? To ID our CPU fine, but why does it need to? It already identifies it in the system manager. What exactly is the point? It's just very fishy sounding. I was also turned away by the fact that it's listed as a driver and not a patch of some sort for windows. CPU's have never had drivers (atleast in Windows)
