Got to love Intel's excuse for being outdone

    http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...l_computing_dc

The particular line that I love is "Intel has held that it will offer the feature when it determines that an "ecosystem" of operating systems and software to support the feature has developed."

OK, yea they have always waited to release something before there is enough support for it. Just like they did with SSE2 and 3.

Intel wants to get as much money out of their current technologies as possible as well as the need is not that great.

I think they should release 64-bit processors. It would speed up the software releases.

Intel is right. The 64bit feature is not needed right now and won't be utilized for quite some time.

Not as long as you might think... (or Intel wants to lead you to believe)

The full version is going to be released no later than July of this year. They are sweating it. As I said in my first post they never waited for an "ecosystem" before realeasing SSE! And other technologies that they prematurly released. Never has it been there policy to "wait for an ecosystem" before releasing new technology that helps it's CPU's. Its just an excuse for being behind.

psst* Wanna know the truth? Intel engineers are all sitting there thinking "Well, they got 64-bit processing down, no big deal. . . but how the HECK did they keep it compatible with 32-bit?!?!?! "

I think the truth is AMD beat them to it, and since it's backward compatible it will most surely become the standard format of 64-bit processing. I know I would NOT want to throw out all of my old software. Intel is probably just waiting and designing theirs to be compatible, so that they won't have to come in late with a competing design.

If MS release's a final of XP64 this summer, then AMD might be in place to do some serious business.

Just to let you know, windows originally planned on having out the 64-bit version of winxp 64 last year, about in timing with the AMD64. Just something to think about. Of course Intel always has there "yamhill.

There's no programs that I need to use that are exclusively 64-bit, so IMO I don't need it yet. AMD is still going to release 9nm Socket A's (32-bit CPU's) and Intel with their Prescott's. Keep in mind too that Windows Longhorn (to be released 2006-2007) has a 32-bit version, so 32-bit will be around till at least 2010.
