Formatting problem
Recently had XP crash, and couldn't get a restart even in safe mode etc.
Formatted C:, tried installing Win98 but am told things like Line A20 can't be found, High Memory area is unavailable, and/or XMS drivers can't be found. This is stops me from putting any OS back on my HD.
Have also tried with an old 3Gig HD but that just won't be recognised.
Am stumped. So had to connect on this rickety old P2 with 95. Which is less than perfect.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Go into the bios and set it to boot off the cd.
Insert Windows XP and restart the computer.
The XP setup should come up and go from there. (you might have to press a key to start off the cd)
I would format the HD in NTFS in the setup program.

What caused the crash? Could it have been (RAM) memory. If you have a problem with memory you will get error messages as you try to install. When you formated C: did you FDisk first and format a FATS system if the system was NTFS?

Erm. I no longer have the XP disc. For... Various reasons...
The crash was almost certainly caused by re-installation of ATI drivers about 50 times, without deleting the previous ones. *Which I now know is very very bad*
I formatted the disk simply from the command prompt. It was hard enough getting that up =) But basically i'm not experienced with this, I just typed format c:/. Am familiar with the terms, FATS and NTFS but am unsure of how to actuallyanswer your question RJohn.
Will try Zapping tonight though.
Thanks very much people. Was clueless. At least I have a start point now =D

If you have a floppy boot disk and can boot from drive a. after booting with or without CD support, at the a: prompt, type in fdisk and enter. Follow on screen directions to delete and create a new partition. If you do not have a boot floppy, you can boot from the CD with Win98 CD in the drive, follow the above for fdisk. If you have further question, post them. After running fdisk you can format from A drive or the CD drive.
