Please help CD drives not seen in XP Pro
Hi all, major problem hoping someone can help.
Setting up a pc for a friend, here are the specs:
MB = not sure ( i can find no identifiable markings on the board itself except for the words AMAZE on the chipset fan. So i figure it is an Amaze PC MB. Yet for the lif of me i cannot find a link to AMAZE PC motherboards.
RAM = 1x64
1x256
1x128
Daewoo cd-rw drive md# RW4048 (exclamation mark in windows)
Creative Cd-Rom (exclamation in windows) device manager
when i boot the pc i get the following information:
k7133BPRO(s)-A3 <-- ran a search for this MB to no avail.
on MB is a chipset Via VT82C686B <installed Via 4 in 1 for this,
bad choice? older non
hyperion and hyperion>
When i boot into windows the only available drive is my C:\ drive.
If i go in my computer all i see is the C: drive.
Both IDE controllers are enabled.
C:\ is Master on Primary and Both CD drives are master and Slave respectively on 2nd IDE controller.
both drives appear in device manager with yellow exclamation marks.
One other device - Plug n Play enumerator i beleive has a yellow exclamation.
someone please help.
all input appreciated.

Within windows device manager i can see both drives are detected, the cd-rw is detected as such. Yet they both have exclamation marks.

The plug and play enumerator is a device driver that detects devices and enables plug and play. If it is not installed correctly then it could be why the CDs are not detected in XP.
You should see if the drives are detected correctly in the BIOS. If they are detected then it is unlikely it is a hardware issue. In this case you should try to repair/update/install the P+P enumerator driver.

Yup,
Cd's are seen fine in BIOS (thats how i installed windows) (booted off cd)
Where or how do i go about figuring out what PnP driver i need?
The only info i have is the fact it says AMAZE PC it is running a VIA VT82c686B chipset.
dammit this one is giving me a headache.
thanx,

Welcome to SysOpt!
Remove the CD drives from Device Manager and reboot. Let Windows re-install them. Good luck!

Does this mean that you have tried out two different versions of the 4in1 drivers - one old and one new?
Download and install Aida32. That should tell you what you have for a motherboard. You may need a BIOS update and you will need to know who made the board to do that.

Before reinstalling those drives, try resetting the BIOS to Setup defaults.

I have already uninstalled the devices (cd roms) from windows and let windows re-install. This was the first step taken. I still had no cd drives displayed in my computer and yellow exclamations in device manager.
i'll try aida. Sisoft didn't seem to identify the board. I'll also try a new IDE cable. but it worked previously, or so it seemed.

Try to install the CD drives INDIVIDUALLY to see if they are recognized without asterisks.....

Try removing the drives and the Plug n Play enumerator in device manager. Then, do not re-boot. Shutdown and unplug the power and ribbon cable to both CD drive. Re-start and see if it the Plug n Play enumerator is installed correctly in DM again. If not, re-install windows. Good luck!

If it has a yellow mark next to it this might not work but its quick and worth a shot. right click mycomputer>manage>disk management then right click and see if you can assign it a drive letter.
