    proper cooling

ok this is going to sound a bit outlandish to some but here goes. i have an aspire x-dreamerII case that comes with 2 fans, one in the window on the side and one in the top. well i added 2 to the front and 2 to the back. my airflow goes as follows. the 2 in the front are blowing to the back, the 2 in the back are exhaust fans, the one in the top is blowing out of the case, and the one in the side is blowing into the case. now i have an amd athlon xp barton 2500+ with stock heatsink and fan. i just checked my cpu temp. and it fluctuated between 46-48C and my mobo temp is steady at 30C. now i can't gripe too much because my system runs decent, BUT i am just wondering why i am not seeing better temps with all those fans? is my airflow screwed up or what is the problem?

    amd athlon xp barton 2500+
    windows xp professional
    1 gig ddr ram
    120gb maxtor hdd

As far as the CPU temps, the HSF/fan combo there has more to do with it than the case fans, although, some case heat can affect the readings. You may need a better HSF/fan and some sort of thermal compound ( like AS 3 or 5 for instance. )

As for the case temps, are your cables blocking flow? This could be a huge factor. How about case location? (is it enclosed or in tight quarters? ) If it's where the exhaust can't blow well away from the case, it won't move the heat away well. Is it near a heat source or in the sun? Try removing the side of the case, see if the temps drop. You may have a simple case of airflow not being good. With that many fans, I'd think you'd be cooler.

Hmmm...I had a very similar setup.
Barton OC'd to 3200, two I cut in the side window, one in front and one out back.
Mine ran cool as can be.

Unless it's darn hot where you're at...I think that may be a little warm.

but...I also had a Vantec Aeroflow, too...
Ditched the stock HSF, cause I knew I was going to OC...and just wanted a little more cheap insurance.

You're right, thought...your temps are just fine...

Mine ran 40C or so, full load, 35 to 38C idle...
I checked with BIOS, Aida32, Asus PC Probe...
Aida and Probe agreed, since they're using the same sensor....but BIOS always said a few degrees cooler.

As mentioned...tie up those wires, if you can, uncongest that case...

Also, did you apply thermal compound? If so, did you apply it correctly? If your HSF came with a "thermal pad", I would remove it and get some Arctic Silver 3 or 5. Good luck!

All the barton stock HSF come with a pad...
And I agree..get rid of it, throw some AS3 or 5 on there...

Be very, very sparingly with it...or, you could just read the instructions.

Make sure you get genuine artic silver...not just a "silver based" compound, in this case...the real deal is best...

you could try unplugging the side fan for a day, as it may be disturbing the thru-flow! monitor the temps as you go about usual daily routines. I too would expect lower temps w\ all those fans. That thing must sound like a jet at full throttle.

the case temp looks perfectly fine to me? I'd consider getting some thermal compound and a good hsf. I bet temps will go down quite a bit.

ok i've decided to buy some arctic silver and a new heatsink/fan, but my question to you is, what heatsink/fan do you guys recommend i buy? i don't really wanna pay a bunch for one if at all possible...

The laws of thermodynamics tell us that (for radiative or convective cooling) you must always have a temperature differential for the heat transferr to occurr. This means that your HSF will run hotter than your case temp. Try ducting the flow from your side fan over to the HSF intake. Tape and a big gulp cup (with the bottom cut out), or some thing similar, makes an ok temporary duct. Ducting will allow you to get the cooler room air directly to your CPU reducing your need for massive case airflow.
Otherwise you seem to have most of the bases covered and have pretty good temps. You might try, temporarily, placing a thermometer inside the case about half way up to check your motherboard readings.
    Enjoy!

I am using I generic 80mm 35 cfm fan in front and a Thermaltake Smart fan 2 in the duct leading to my CPU (my cooling setup is kind of unique). Air removal is handled by a 90mm Datek. If you want a quiet case some people swear by panaflow fans.
My heatsink is a Thermalright slk900a and has given me the best cooling that I have had since I removed the watercooling.
Whatever fan you get make sure it has ball bearings, for longer life.
    Enjoy!
