opinion
In my humble opinion, flashy graphics don't really make or break a game. What really counts is the gameplay and how much fun you have playing a particular game. I don't mean to say that newer games are bad, just that old games can be just as good, even if they aren't as pretty.

Couldn't agree more...
I still replay HL every 18 months or so, and it's graphics are not much better than NOLF.
My current fave oldie game is AvP2.
Graphics can carry a title only so far.

Yeah, I got into HL really late (like last year) and even though the graphics are pretty bad by today's standards, it still managed to make me jump (you know, those headcrabs comin outta nowhere...) and get me pumped during big firefights -- that's what counts.

yup, and the thing about half-life (and as much as I hate to admit it, starcraft) is that they were the first generation of games that had "good enough" graphics.
Anything visually nicer than half-life is an extra, half-life is almost the base case of graphics, any lower and it's a detriment from the game, but it has good enough graphics that any game on it with good enough game play will be a success.
same for starcraft, and that is why I think those games are still played 5/6 years later.

Quest for Glory series (except 5) THE BEST RPG ever!
It gets no better, and that's a old old game, I even like the graphics. There's something to be said about playing something that looks more like a cartoon.
Take the new Sam and Max for expample, I loved the first one, the graphics endeared you to the characters, now it'll be 3D, and that's just weird.
I think people and the industry has gotten the idea in thier head that the more realistic and/or "3D" the game, the better.
