Why does computer freeze on games?

Can anyone tell me why on just about every game I play ,the computer freezes?

What are your system specs? Does this occur when you use other graphical applications? It could be a driver problem, a problem with DirectX, or a hardwre issue. In the area of hardware, are you overclocking? Are the temps too high for the system (use motherboard monitor 5 to check it out: http://mbm.livewiredev.com/download5.htm ...50C is the limit for Intel cpus (not the P4) and 60C is the limit for Athlons and Durons)

We need more info to get to the heart though.

I have directx 7

Im not overclocking

Im running between 32-38 degrees

also the computer does kind of lag behind a bit too much,as i do different stuff quickly sometimes

what windows you running? have the latest updates for your harware and patches for your games??

windows 98- i think second edition

i could look for updates for drivers

patches-it happens on demos,and a lot of games making me think it wouldnt be patches i dont think

You don't mention if your graphics are built on to your motherboard or what type of games you are attempting to play. If all your other graphic needs are being met, and it is just the games causing problems, I'd bet money that you need to upgrade your graphics card. Hopefully you have a motherboard with an AGP slot for a new card. You'll have to open your case and see what you have. I'd recommend at least a 32mb graphics card that supports directx 8 and open GL. I'd also add some RAM since it is so cheap.

Are you running any cute desktop programs? I'm running Activision, which hides the text below my icons and some other stuff. It turned out this program was causing conflicts with games.

It depends on the games you are trying to play. It could be a driver issue too!
Also, you only have 64MB Ram and a "weak" TNT card.!

Are these multiplayer games?

If so, eliminate networking! Disconnect your NIC and boot the system standalone. Try running your games in single player mode. If they are more stable then you need to modify your NIC driver.

In the NIC bindings change the negotiation from Auto to the following one at a time in the following order until things stabalize

100Mbs Full Duplex
100Mbs Half Duplex
10Mbs Full Duplex
10Mbs Half Duplex

If it is not networking then intermittant hard locks (no software errors) are usually video, RAM or motherboard. Try taking some of the RAM out and retry. Move the RAM to different slots.

Not running any cute programs,or if there were I did stop them.

I got direct x 8,as not sure what direct x I had before.Also downloaded a driver for tnt.Its running better if anything,but still freezes more often than not. more too than brothers amd 5oo,voodoo 3,128 ram too.also i get blue screens too.
