Shuttle PC's... are they any good?

    Hi all,

My parents have finally decided to get a new computer, but I'll kill myself before I let them go to Dixons or PC World. I've always bought exactly the components I want and built it myself.

Thing is, my mum wants something that can sit on the desk (ie not a tower) and she quite fancies the shuttle computers.

Am I right in thinking you can run pretty much a desktop spec using a shuttle? I'm thinking P4 or Athlon around 2.6Mhz+, and a decent Graphics card like ATi 9800 pro. Can they run that spec?

I've also heard they get quite hot rather quickly (as they're small) now my parents also don't want a 'puter as loud as mine (admittedly mine sounds like a plane taking off).

So... small/stylish 'puter, fast, quiet. Any suggestions?

    Rick

Don't think you can say the words decent and 9800 pro in the same sentence...

That is a top notch card...but, thus puts out some heat.

Unless your folks are heavy gamers....scale down to a Ge4 Ti4200...or even a cheaper 9600 Pro. Good little cards, don't heat up as much.

As far as the shuttle...to each is own...but they are kinda nice.

Pentiums don't generally run as hot. We have one in a store, restaurant if you will, and it is on 24/7....no problems for a few months now.

They are cute...but, you have to ask yourself the most important question.

Do you want to build a PC and be done with it for a while...or, do you think your 'rents will want to upgrade in the next year or two. you might want to think about a Micro ATX or Mini ATX design if so...

Smaller than the norm, but gives a little breathing room for more components.

The Shuttle have only one Optical drive space...

So, in the world of CD copying, etc., not too viable...

Check out Newegg.com for some mini and micro ATX form cases...

The Shuttle is very noisy and sits by your ear. I'll side with dajogejr and recommend building a micro-ATX desktop PC. In-Win has nice cases - as does Maxtop.

    Thanks for the replies fellas!

I can't believe I didn't think about the shuttle only having one CD bay. Thats ****. They can't have that then.

I'll look into the micro-ATX cases. Thanks again for your advice

I'd have to agree with the folks here. They do get good reviews in Maximum PC for performance though.

They have both Athlon and P4 Shuttle barebone systems, but with their own custom cases.
