    8-Bit Color mode after restart

    Athlon XP2200
    Gigabyte GA-7DXE
    256Mb DDR
    GF4 MX440 64Mb

The above has developed a problem whereby when the PC is shut down then restarted the color mode has reduced to 8-Bit 256 Colours and has to be reset to 32-Bit mode manually. It happens every time - any ideas?

    A couple of questions:

What OS and driver are you using?

Did this happen right after a driver or DX upgrade, or was it out of the blue?

Depending on your OS you may need the AMD miniport driver to get your AGP operating properly.

Now, when you say a restart, what are you meaning? Do you mean going through the shutdown procedure, or simply turning off the machine. Some versions of Windows only save setting changes on shutdown, so if you're hitting reset you'd lose those. You can also run into issues if you have a newer HD and are running at the edge of your PSU.

There's a lot that can be causing this and we can't help you unless we know more.

Important details for things like this are not only your CPU, videocard and motherboard, but also the motherboard chipset and the OS. Sometimes members will know a fix for a particular chipset but not know all the boards with that chipset. If you don't know your motherboard has a hybrid AMD/VIA chipset with an AMD761 Northbridge and VIA 686B southbridge.

I had a similar problem with one of my older systems on windows 98se. Mine kept going to 256 bit color.
Downloading the latest driver sloved my problem.

System is running Windows XP - it's a client's machine so I don't yet know which driver he's using.
