pc won't boot after fitting adapter

Hi, my first time here but I hope someone can help me.

I have just bought a new Lyncsys wireless router with two pci adapters.
The problem I have is that the adapters won't work on one of my pc's.
I tried it on one pc with win98 and it worked fine, but when I fitted into the pc with xp pro the pc won't even boot up. If i remove it the pc works fine.
Sometimes it beeps repeatedly, sometimes it doesn't. I have tried all my pci slots but nothing seems to work.
I have spoken with tech support at Linksys but they don't seem to have any ideas.
Any help would be much appreciated.

It's probably one of three things:

    1. You need a BIOS update.

    2. Your power supply is too weak. The USB adapter needs 5VDC and about 200mA and that may put your PSU over the limit.

    3. You're plugging it in to mis-wired USB ports. Try to use only the backplane ports.

To get XP to finally install the driver for the Linksys, disable serial number generation.
In bios and turn off any pci bus mastering as well. XP will then boot and not blue screen anymore. Then reinstall the latest driver

Thank you both for very speedy replies.

    Any ideas on finding out?

    Try bios agent:
    http://www.esupport.com/biosagent/in...m?refererid=12

That will at least give you a more definite model number. i440bx is the chipset, but I'm not sure if that's the full model of the board.

I'm unsure of the computer type - i had it upgraded last year so I think they just threw a bit of everything in!

I have just tried the adapter again to try and count the bleeps, but it actually booted up and got as far as the windows logo screen, then froze. I tried it again but it did the same, a third time and it beeped at me again!

I have tried to find the seriel number generator in bios, as suggested earlier, but i can't see it anywhere, also the pci bus mastering i found is in device manager, as an ide controller, is that the one i should disable?

I'm getting my new up to date pc next week and this is going to be my 'other one', but i still want to network them.

I am appreciating all your help and advice, and i'm sorry i'm not exactly up on all the lingo, but i'm doing my best

Any more help would be great.

There should be a label on it with the information on it. Sometimes you have to take it out to see the label.

Its the box with all the wires coming out of it. The power cord from the wall plug, plugs in to the back of it.
