ACDSee 6.0 Problems ...
For anyone who has used ACDSee -- I am unable to run the trial version. When I launch the program, the user interface appears and the following pop-up window/error appears:
"ACDSee has encountered a system error and will close now"
I am running WinXP Pro SP1 with all critical updates on a P4 2.4 with 512MB RAM. My machine is clean as I run defrag weekly and Norton's 3 times a week.
I have uninstalled and re-installed 3 or 4 times ... each time trying various things such as shutting down NAV, etc. to see if I could find the culprit. I've downloaded the file 3 different times and entered 3 different emails to obtain 3 different trial key codes.
The only thing that ACDSee has mentioned when I inquired via email was to delete the Cataloge folder to force ACDSee to recreate the database -- but this has no bearing on the problem.
Any ideas are appreciated.

Quickest fix would be to uninstall
Make sure the actual folder is properly deleted manually if necessary from the program files directory
Then run microsofts regclean program to clean up the registry entires that may be left over

fancyf -- I have been using Irfanview for 6 yrs now and it's great for many things. However, it is definitely IMO not a image management application. I am not utilizing ACDSee for any type of enhancements, etc. ... as I have PhotoShop, Fireworks, PS Elements, and many others including Irfanview for that kind of work. I'm wanting a image management app that is more robust than Jasc Paint Shop Pro or adobe PHotoshop Album. I've found two that match what I'm looking for -- ACDSee and Phototools iImage.
Thanks for the tips omendata -- I'll give that a try and report back with the results.

Omendata -- do you think it would be wise to simply perform a search for any string in the registry containing ACDSEE and remove it?
The bad areas were found and removed ... but I don't believe any were related to ACDSee.

No luck -- I omitted every entry in the registry for ACDSee and I still have the same problem -- as well as manually deleting the ACDSee folders, etc.
Any other ideas?

did you try my suggestion in order uninstall , delete and run regclean after
i would also kill all non essential tasks and setrives in task manager and have a look and see if there are any services running that might be suspicious in the system services applet!
do you not have system restore running? and a restore point?
I recommend thumbsplus if you want a really good image manipulator - you can create batch functions that can apply several transofrmations all at the one time to one or many images , crop , resize , filter , lighten etc - even allows you to create one or more web pages in multiple formats for multiple images - takes a few hours to master but its well worthwhile woodcyd
give it a try

Yes, in that order, etc.
I've looked at all services & processes using Process Explorer. I've also run AdAware & Spybot and gotten rid of all the potential spyware apps.
Yes, System Restore is running and before messing with my registry, I always create a restore point.
I have been using ThumbsPlus for about a year at home and work and I do like the program. But, again, I'm not looking for image manipulation as I have lots of high-end programs for that. I'm looking for image management primarily.
I'm playing with IMatch a little until I can get ACDSee figured out. The primary reason I'm trying so hard to get ACDSee going is due to how much MaximumPC likes the program compared to all the others.

Have you previously had it installed and running? It is only a trial version your trying to run.

No, this general time frame is the first time I've tried using ACDSee. I've been in touch with ACDSee about it ... but haven't received any good feedback yet on how to make it work. If I am unable to get the trial version running - then I'm not about to pay money for it. From what I've read, the trial version is the same as the full version with exception to the 30day maximum use.

I have 3 different codes for the trial version as I've downloaded it from their main site with 3 different email addresses to try and get one to load. Thing is ... I doubt it will run successfully regardless if it's installed w/ a purchase code vs. a trial code.

Omendata -- I truly appreciate the tip! However, I'm already using (attempting) the most recent version of ACDSee ... v6.0. Unfortunately, this article doesn't appear to have any info that assists someone with the same error message when using WinXP and v6.X. The only thing mentioned as a resolution is to download v6.X which I've done 3 times.
