    so the dlink router does not include a wireless hub/switch.

    So are you running all your machines wireless to the main netowrk in ad-hoc mode?

    ie

    win98
    linksys -> dlink ->cable modem
    dlink wireless -> ad-hoc

    win98-2
    dlink wireless -> ad-hoc

    ???

    right ive done a bit of searching so it seems the router is a wireless router

    you are using the router as the means to connect all your pc's
    wireless infrastructure mode

    the linksys is hardwired to the router

    so what are the ip addresses on each card and why use two nics on the one machine to connect to the router?

    Yes the router is wired to the Linksys NIC and the IPs are set to Autodetect so I'll have to look for'm.
    Followed the manual to PING and it didn't work.

    you cant have two cards dhcp (autodetect) on the one pc from the same dhcp server

    get all the ip addresses

    dos prompt
    and type

    ipconfig /all

    or from windows

    start run

    type winipcfg

    then ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

    substitute the ip address of each machine (card)
    a reply means it can be seen - connected to the network

    no click the start button
    then select run
    then in the box
    type

    winipcfg

    take the ip address given

    stick those numbers into the ping command

    say win98 pc 2 has ip address 192.168.0.1

    on win98 pc 1 you then
    click start button
    select run
    type dosprmpt
    then hit return

    black screen

    then type

    ping 192.168.0.1 (or whatever address you got for win98pc 2)

    you really need to read up on networking before attempting to setup what you are doing - even pros can get their knickers in a twist

    check this site and read it thooroughly so you understand what you are doing!

    Thanks omendata,
    I think I follow now, been to many sites and have the D-LINK cd in it now restarting everything. Been seeing a lot of misinformation between sites. Confusing, even in d-links own manual. You've been a great help so far really app. it so don't give up on me!
    It's almost 3 am here and I'd better get some sleep. I'll finish deleting/reinstalling/restarting tomorrow and I'll let you know how it turns out. Will also look at that link before I start. All the reading I did before I started this said it would be easy! BS!
    First started with a lot of missing files on Windows 98 and had to keep loading them almost one at a time. msn32dll was completely missing!

    He doesn't know diddly about network IDs and you don't seem willing to explain further, do you?

    NetBEUI is easier and secure.

    It was the default in the Win98 days. It hasn't been since Win98SE.

    IPX doesn't deal well with routers. It's best to avoid it.
