Stupid purchase?

I went with the EPOX 8rda3+ cause Toms hardware gave it a good review and the site is usually a pretty reliable source for hardware reviews.

You lose soundstorm on the board you want IIRC, so you need an outside soundcard truthfully so you don't waste any CPU cycles processing sound info for the onboard controller which isn't very effecient. I mean if your going to overclock, you don't want something to hinder your performance, I know I wouldn't. The only way to do that on the 8rda3+ is to get an audigy 2 which gives the CPU a very slight hit compared to onboard audio. If the 8rda3+'s are shipping with soundstorm now, well then it is a safe buy. But the best OCing boards are the now discontinued 8rda+ and the still produced Abit NF7-S V 2.0 (which has soundstorm, thus very little cpu hit).

There is no reason to spend $260 on a CPU anymore.

Save yourself some money. You can buy the same processor for a lot less a year down the road.

One of my new systems has an 8RDA3+ that's running 220FSB out of the box. (With 6ns memory may I add)

I'd crank my FSB up, but ever since it took a hit when the AC went out while I was away, a bit over 400 and it gets unstable. Down from 422. Would help as I wouldn't have to wire mod the chip to get higher. Thinking of doing it, just removing the heatsink would be royal pain in the [*-deleted word-*] to do so, then mounting it again ([*-deleted word-*] laminate). Eugh. I'll stick with 2.5 ghz till I have to get more performance (but by then it'll be new system time), until then I'm not gonna bother or I don't think I will even then.

have you read any articles of ComPooter's Hardware?
i heard they got some great articles!!

especially the one where he runs his AMD 2500+ barton at 166 and his RAM at 200

The base athlon 64 is going for only 400 @ newegg. That's as good a price for a top of the line CPU if I ever saw one.

the 64 bit is a waste of money IMO thats like buying the first P4's big changes might occur.......best to wait out until every single processor in the market is 64 bit with PCI-x and PCI-express

Defiantely, unless you really need the absolute best processor, and money isn't really an option, wait for the chips to prove themselves, and for their prices to fall.

They need to release lower end versions of the Athlon 64 so we can overclock it.

From intial tests the A64 does not look at all friendly in overclockers terms, just shy of 200Mhz gain seems to be about the best you'll get ATM

Agree.. well if i building a new pc.. i will get the Barton 2500XP.. which under $100.
