    Need Help with USB hub

    I got a generic USB hub with no driver. I plugged it in one of the 2 sockets on my HP omnibook lap top. The USB mouse on the other socket stopped working. Only the built in mouse did. I put the mouse in one of the hub sockets but no use, although the XP recognized it. I tried to reinstall driver for the mouse (Genius) but XP was not even recognizing that the mouse was connected to the computer. The only thing that worked is removing the hub and going back to a restore point.


    what can I do?

    Take it back. It's junk. Get a quality powered USB hub. Don't buy cheap.

    But I avoided the powered one because it creates some clutter around my lap top. the whole idea is to keep thinkgs portable. Are you saying this wouldnt happen with another brand?

    Maybe not. Here in the States, Sam's Club has an excellent two-hub package with an unpowered hub that actually works. WalMart has them too. The brand is Stratitec:

    USB 2.0 hubs require power, BTW. Perhaps you should consider a USB 2.0 adapter instead:

    Anyway, you are getting to the point where you're expecting the laptop to be a desktop replacement. Despite what you might have heard about this being workable, it really isn't. Laptops are for roadwork and minimalist setups. They will never replace the desktop.

    Well just to follow up on this matter.

    I took the lap top to a local computer professional. He went into safe mode, removed all drivers for USB hub and for the mouse. Restarted, amazingly enough, XP recognized everything and both USB hub and the mouse are working fine. Obviously there was some kind of conflict between the two when the mouse was occupying certain IRQ that is necessary for the hub but when started all over, XP made the adjustment.....

    And I am the one who thought I could find an answer for everything on this forum.....

    BPB is still 100% correct and you are still stuck with a piece of Junk.
    My experience USB hubs and Modems is that you can get them to work only after lots of messing around and then are not reliable!

    PS, BUT no matter what they are slow as molasses!

    The device is working fine and not too slow. Besides that in this nick of the woods you can t give back anything you buy....

    It looks like the values on this forum are so low, like the pants....
