Help! Trouble upgrading from Win98 to W2K Pro

Hi,

I'm having a difficult time upgrading a PC from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 Professional.

Everything works just fine at the beginning, but when I reach the part where it checks for compatibility, a Fatal Error message pops up and I am unable to go any further.

I tried installing several ways: in Safe Mode (but it couldn't identify the D: (CD-ROM) drive). Then I tried installing via MS-DOS boot and that couldn't identify the D: drive either.

And yet, in Normal mode, the CD is read through the D: drive, and all goes well until the compatibility check.

Any ideas what this could be? It's worked on all our other PCs.

What is the Fatal Error message?

copy the the contents to hdd and install it from there. Also disable any antivirus your runnin before proceeding with the install.

you should really do a clean install. that way you don't inherit problems from your win98. press ctrl+alt+del and close everything except for explorer and systray. then run the win2k setup.

The Fatal Error message reads: "Setup cannot continue. Please contact Microsoft Technical Support".

To reiterate, it would be better to just do a clean install. backup your data first. boot from the win2k cd and run the setup from there. you may need to change your bios to boot from cd first. during the setup, you can reformat the drive to start off fresh.
