    IDE drives crashing Win98SE

Almost every time I fire up one of my IDE drives I get a BSOD with this msg:

"An exception OE has ocurred at 0028:C1977703 in Vxd SAVRT(02)+00009653. This was called from 0028:C151F310 in Vxd CDFS(04)+00000020. It may be possible to continue normally."

Sometimes I am able to continue but other times the system will restart itself unprompted. Reinstalling Windows didn't help-
nor did taking either of the drives out of the equation. I am
able to view dvd's but any other type of disc (cdrw/audio/data)
will cause a crash. What's strange is that I recently reformatted
my c: drive and all was well a few days ago.

    My gear is : AMD XP 1800+ / Gigabyte GA7 VA-X mobo, 256M
crappy PC2100 ram, Radeon 7500 agp card, Maxtor 80G hdd,
LG CED-8120B cdrw, BTC BDV 316C dvd rom drive, Win98SE
all in a new case with 350W PS (system not OC'd)

    Any suggestions... (besides reformatting again)?

    thnx fer tha luv... spazz

Is this just the CD and DVD drives causing bluescreens?
What is the configuration? Are they together on the same controller?

The OE exception in VXD CDFS (CD File System) is associated with a DOS name vunerability for which Microsoft has a security patch.
SAVRT.vxd is a Norton file which has been known to cause problems after Norton has been uninstalled.
Perhaps Windows should be updated before Norton is installed.
The vulnerability can be exploited by clicking on a link.

thanx for the help. The settings initially were:

    PM- Maxtor hdd
    PS- cdrw
    SM- dvdrom
but removing either one of these didn't help so
    I'll try Ol' Tunzafun's suggestions.

    get back to ya soon....

    hmmm...

I updated Win98SE but the problem persists.
What's weird is that Cleansweep 2002 hadn't been
uninstalled this time. This problem has come up before- I had to re and re to fix it then.

So should I uninstall Cleansweep? Reinstall it?
Should I expect this problem every time I install Cleansweep on one of my systems?

My guess is that there was some damage caused by clicking on some link and that applying the patch now is not going to correct that damage. I would Format and re-install Windows and apply all fixes and updates before going anywhere else on line. Make certain that one of those patches is Q256015 MS00-017 for "DOS Device in Path Name" vulnerability patch. Then install NSW.
I have run 98SE with NSW2002 and that same LG 8120B so I know that they can work well together.
    Good luck.

I appreciate the help. After what I've done, I'm getting this IE6 setup upon bootup that basically tells me it's already installed the most recent
version so I've definately messed something else
up anyway. Will RE and RE and apply patches as
    you've suggested.

    Any other Win98SE updates/patches you'd
recommend? I understand Micro$oft is soon going to be dropping all support for Win98 so I better grab what I need now to avoid possible probs in the future.

    Thanks again for your guidance.

Have you loaded VIA's 4in1 chipset drivers? if not, go get the older version 435 4in1's for Win98/se. Win9x is not supported in the latest Hyperion drivers.

Ooppss I meant to add the link to the VIA's page where the 435 4in1s can be downloaded. Look in the discription text for the link

**Note: Win95/98/98SE are now relatively old operating systems, and drivers are no longer optimized for those operating systems. Many users of VIA chipsets who run Win95/98/98SE report that using an older version, such as VIA 4in1 version 4.35, they experience a more responsive system.

Thanx but this prob has been resolved. I reformatted and reinstalled Windows. Yep,
I did have the 4 in 1 drivers installed.
