Slow to realize internet connection.
I have a dialup internet connection shared across ethernet with 2 computers. The computer with the modem assigns the ip to the other computer. The internet works fine on both. And I don't always leave the internet connected. But when I boot up the computer without the modem, it always takes a while for it to realize that there is an internet connection on the other one when it isn't connected. I have a shortcut to the connection on the desktop, but I can't the shortcut to connect to the internet for about 5-10 mins. Is there any way I can fix this? All the other networking stuff works right away. I can share printers and drives just fine.

You should be able to just assign it a static I/P address.

Is it still going to take a while to realize the connection?

It shouldn't. however, if your talking about when you connect to the Internet with the computer without the modem and the delay that is encountered connecting to the Internet with that computer then there isn't much you can do about it.
Example, I had my Daughter's computer set up that way and when you connect to the Internet with it there is a delay and you get the page cannot be found because it times out before it connects.
But if you click the refresh button it will connect to whatever site then everything is fine then. I could never find a cure for this and all the people I talked to said its just something you have to live with, with this type of set up.
