Audigy 2 Platinum problems...
Greetings.
I recently upgraded my OS from W2K to XP Pro, and as a part of that operation, went about making sure that everything else was updated as well. I visited the Creative site, and opted to make use of their online update service, which was where the problems began. The updater ran to near completion, and then froze as tight as the bark on a tree. I had no recourse except to reset the system.
Once it came back up, naturally, it ran scandisk, completed that, and I attempted to uninstall the Audigy, to no avail, the uninstaller claimed that certain files were missing. Next, I tried to run the installer, and chose repair, and things went ballistic again, frozen system. After the reboot, I looked around and found that there were several duplicate folders, such as \name and \name(2), so I manually removed the Creative folder, and ran a registry cleaner.
I have managed to get the OEM CD to install to some extent, and have manually updated the drivers and software using the downloads available on the site, however, no matter what I try, I cannot get the confounded Audigy program group to install properly. There are several icons, which are the Windows default instead of the Creative ones, all of which are linked to missing executable files in the folders called. Further, the executables are not present in any location on my system.
Contacting Creative has been all but fruitless, they have suggested removing and reinstalling the drivers, no help there, as well as suggesting removing the card, rebooting three times without installing it, then installing it. The last few times I have responded back, I have received the exact same suggestions, and they are verbatim, word for word, the same as I got in the first place.
Has anyone here had a similar experience? For the most part, the card is finally useable once more, with the exception of the AudioHQ, Speaker calibration, Wave Studio, and a couple of others.
It strikes me as odd that everything worked properly before I attempted using the online updater. Not sure if this has any bearing or not, but the card and software were originally installed under W2K Pro, and that upgraded to XP Pro.
System specs:
Intel P4 2.66
Abit IC7 mobo
1G DDR400, (2 512M, dual channel)
Audigy 2 Platinum
GeForce FX 5600
3Com NIC
Sony DVD-ROM
Plextor Premium CDRW
XP Pro, SP1
Thanks for any suggestions you may have, as mentioned, Creative has been less than helpful in providing anything other than what appears to be standardized "cut and paste" replies, and not a single suggestion on their knowledge base has been useful...

WinXP has restore points. Find it and use it. It has probably automatically created one for you after the upgrade/install that will save your **** here.
BTW: Welcome to Syspot

Unfortunately, that didn't work either in my case. I used a restore point from the day before the ill-fated decision to update things Creative, but it was still unable to make heads or tails of the shambles left over from the installer.
I've been able to get most of the features working, but not all of them. One of these days, I may resort to doing a format and reinstallation of everything, but in the meantime, since the only problems I have had are with the sound software, and I can't justify the downtime to format and clean install from the ground up, I suppose I'll just deal with it for the time being.
Thanks for the welcome, btw!

Dang, That sucks. I would have done the same thing you did....sift through the registry, but Creative has so much other **** that installs that it seems like an overwhelming task. I am now extremely careful when installing this stuff to sort out all the bloat so I just have the useful stuff. I guess I will also be weary of that online service update too.
