    Gigabit LAN??

Would Gigabit LAN on a P4P800 (3Com Gigabit) show a lot of speed increase on a Cable connection or is Gigabit more for T1 and faster?

Trsut me, your not gonna notice a difference. If you have internet that runs @ gigabit speeds, I want to know where, so I can move there

Yeah pure hokum - You wouldnt see any difference above 100mbps unless you go Sonet - oc3+ etc in which case your name must be Mr Gates.

They are great for networks with gigabit backbones.

Not really - I havent worked with any companies that have giggy to the desktop - Its just another fad much like the new neon lit modded cases - IE It help sells more boards - After all gig sounds better than meg too!!!

    Advertising mate - advertising!!!

Although they will no doubt refer to it as future proofing but by the time gig to the desktop becomes common these mobos and chips will be well out of date.

I've setup gigabit servers. it's great because if multiple computers start accessing files from the servers the speed won't drop dramatically. I've seen enough computer access a server where you where just pulling off a file at around 60k. If you're pulling off an application, it'll take a bit. It's also good to have a gigabit server when you're going to pull off atwork from it, those png file can get pretty big.

A T3 runs at 64mbps up and down, so a regualr 100mb connection will be just as good.

Gigabit lan should be for just business at the moment.

Also you can get a 10/100 nic for $10 bucks, name brand too. And a gigabit for around $40. So would the price be worth it?

    Like Omendata said, pure advertisement.

I don't see the idea of giving a workstation a sata drive rig and a gigabit ethernet card.

I do however see giving a server a sata rig and a gigabit ethernet card.

    just my 2cents worth.
