    It hates me I swear!!

My girl friend has a small network of three computers and a dsl box. All of this is connected by a hub (yes hub, not switch). Well i went over there to fix it because she couldn't get web pages to load and that is where the trouble began, i made it so much worse that it was scarry. Now i'm amazed that she doesn't hate me for breaking it. So i need some help now.

Sorry about how long this is but it is a wierd problem so i will tell you all that i did.

She has one computer connected to the dsl and all the other computers proxy through it, the proxy computer loads stuff fine but the others don't. Her other 2 computers get ip's automaticly from her proxy server using dhcp. And she uses the windows proxy not a program.

Started out, went to IE and it would load some pages but not others. (It wasn't just loading some because of ip's in the catch because I did a search at hotbot and could load some of the pages.) It wouldn't load google, i would have tryed another brouser but it wouldn't load mozila or Avant either.

all on her room computer, not the proxy: I tryed pinging some addresses. I would ping google.com and it would never translate the name to ip so I searched for dns servers and changed the TCP/IP Prefs to point to a root dns server for it's primary (i could ping the dns too). Then it still wouldn't translate so i manually set it's ip to the same range as the proxy. Set the proxy as the dns, and the gateway. When i reset the local area network it wouldn't ping the proxy. I restarted and it wouldn't ping the proxy. I restarted the proxy and it still wouldn't ping. All the while the proxy could ping me but i couldn't ping it. Grrrrr

So I got mad and reset the computer to auto obtain an ip and dns server, then restarted the computer. When it restarted it still couldn't ping the proxy (remember settings are exact same as when i got there). So i did a ipconfig /all and it for some strange reason was in a different subnet . I typed ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /all again and my ip was gone. But when i did ipconfig /renew it errored and wouldn't work. So i restarted again and went over in a corner to cry by myself .

Now i need help, i've tryed everything i can think to do. Any suggestions. And please don't say get a configurable switch that can do dhcp i know thats an answer but she doesn't want to buy something new. Thanks, sorry again for the long message.

Switch everything off and reboot the proxy first then start on each of the other machines.

Do you mean proxy server v3.0 or are you talking about the ICS?

Try removing and reinstalling the tcp/ip stack on the client machine that is having the problems first.

It would also help to know what operating systems you are using!!!

I'm assuming you have win2k or xp. Either I missed it or you didn't say. anyways, did you try ipconfig /flushdns ?

what do you mean by windows proxy? ICS? are you sure that ICS is set up properly and is running correctly? the IP of the host system should be 192.168.0.1, so all your other computers will be 192.168.0.x

all clients are supposed to obtain IP automatically.

You should just get a router and get rid of the ICS.

They are all XP, the same problem is on both computers, one of which is new out of the box. The "proxy" is using ICS.

I didn't try ipconfig /flushdns last night but i did go into services and restart the dns client a few times.

She did have AnalogX proxy but didn't like it. Then she switched to Proxy+ but i don't think it ever got configured right so she then switched all her computers to ICS.

I wish she had a router, it would make it a lot easyer. i was thinking of bringing my router to her house and setting it up but i need it.

is this a girl friend or a girlfriend? You could definitely score some points by getting her a router and making everything work. hehe

did you make sure the firewalls in xp are disabled?

do you have any hosts files?

do you have some weird spyware, like promulgate? you might want to run adaware.

Yes there is a slight atachment nice link to the router, i may go ahead and get it. Not very expensive at all. It could be a late birthday present....

Firewalls are off. She didn't even have her dsl firewall on... I changed that. I've got adaware on a cd, i'll try running it.

What are host files, i tryed googleing for it but couldn't find a good definition.

hosts files are used for static IP to DNS entries. some programs like kazaa use them. you probably don't have any, but it's another avenue to explore.

in xp, the hosts files are in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc. your system might be different, but that's the default folder. hosts files do not have extensions, so don't be fooled if you have a hosts.sam or something. .sam is a sample file.

Thanks for the link! I learned something new. So if any important web pages can't be loaded i can go to an internet whois find the sites ip and stick it into her hosts file!!

I will probably scan for spyware over my lunch and post back.

In XP, the tcp/ip stack can be rebuilt as follows:

Open a command window, and enter the following at the C:\> prompt:

    C:\>netsh int ip reset c:\newstack.log

    Hope this helps, good luck!
