    windows 2000 unnecessary files

Hi I have a Windows 2000 server and I cannot run the defragmenter because there is not enough free space. Is there a list of file types ie tmp, or file names which can safely be removed to free up some space?
    Thanks Glenn

Do you only have the one partition? More info would be handy, like hard drives, partitions, ram, normal memory usage, etc.

Depending, you might be able to move some folders to another drive or partition long enough to defrag, or also depending, reduce your swapfile or move it temporarilly (You may need to turn off some services to reduce it, again depending)

If your drive's that full you really need to get more space

I try to never let partitions get over 75% full or so.

You could delete files in tmp or temp folders.
Clear the Temporary Internet Files folder an history!
Do a search for *.gid, *.tmp, *.old and *.bak an delete them
    .gid - for help files
.tmp - some programs make these as backups an ferget to delete them
.old - after updating a program or hardware during the installation it may rename a file with the .old extention befor placing the new one in
    .bak - backup files
Uninstall any programs you don't use anymore or could live without!
Get a bigger HD > there cheap!
If you have a CD-RW burn file to a CD.
Zip file like text and pictures.

    Do this:

    Start > Run > cleanmgr /sageset:99

Select everything there except the cataloging.

    Now:

    Start > Run > cleanmgr /sagerun:99

That should do it unless there are multiple accounts. In that case, run that in each account.
