    Ohhhhhhhhhhhh "NO" Hellllllllllllllllllllllllp!

My secondary Hdd has died....... Its no longer showing up on the
"My Computer" screen & it makes a strange whirring clicking sound........

I recently copied a directory (Cut & paste) to it & now as I can't access the thing I'm a bit stuck......... Is there anyway I can retrieve this directory?

The data in this directory is quite important & I'm currently checking my back up Cd's to find out whats what (No luck so far)

    Any suggestions

See what a partition program thinks of your drive, - or will report whats up in some ways - like if the drive is actually there but the format has died
Did you not have a S.M.A.R.T proggie running

If the drive is making a whirring and clicking sound, I believe it is spinning up and the heads are trying to read it, but there is no "starting place". That may be due to the bios not seeing the drive. If you cannot set the bios to see the drive, it will not be found in dos or windows. Try re-jumpering it... a new jumper if you have one. Is that drive bootable?..if so, try jumpering it as a master and put it on the cable by itself...see if it can be detected.

Try the drive in a different computer...you never know what might work. Could also be as simple as a bad ribbon cable...those sockets are not hard wired to the ribbon, they have stick-pins that puncture the ribbon to make contact with the wires inside... I have had to renew several ribbon cables because of something like this.

Clicking and whirring sounds doesnt mean that Bovon. If the BIOS cant see the drive, itll spin up, and sound like normal, you just wont be able to do anything with it because teh firmware is still inplace to tell the drive how to operate but the bios cant see it to access it.

Those sounds usually mean the motor or heads are dying, or dead.

At this point i think your chances are next to none, and only the data recovery men are your only hope.

    Sorry man.

Well the machine fails to post now with the offending drive in

I have disconnected it & the machine runs again......

The offending Hdd was too hot to handle when I first disconected it.

I have left the side off the tower & placed a desk fan blowing inside .....

    My my oooooh lordy

19 October 1999 (Date stamped on it) I will e-mail seagate & see what they can come up with

I'm looking in to retreving data now

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it's dead. Have come across this several times in the past. Does it sound like a car indicator turned on?
