    geforce 4 locks computer at 16 bit or higher

    Just recently my forsa geforce4 MX 440-se started to have problems. I can run in 256k color mode fine but if i switch to 16-bit or higher then it locks the whole computer within 30 sec if not immediately. Seemed like an odd error. I tried some different drivers, reinstalled windows etc but it still occurs. So I threw in my old video card and it works fine. I thought perhaps the video card might have been overheating but the fan on it still is working. I know it is one the cheaper geforce cards (I can't even find the manufacturers website).

    Does it sound like it is dying or is this a common problem?

    try a new Direct X
    www.microsoft.com/directx
    and try the new nVidia drivers

    I guess I should have elaborated rather than say i tried different drivers, but yes: tried the newest directx & several different nvidia drivers all the way back to the reliable 30.82 version.

    Post your system specs. I had a problem on my AMD-K6-2 era system with a GF4 MX 440 card. I had to disable AGP turbo mode in the BIOS or my system would freeze before I could boot into windows. It was always in regular, not safe mode.

    The latest BIOS revision for my board allowed the system to supprt RIVA TNT cards and Rag 128 cards without freezing. My MX card works now in AGP1x mode.

    BTW: Some mainboards have a jumper that disables turbo mode. Check your documentation.

    You neglected to mention a Windows version. Most likely you need to strip all drivers and start over. You switch drivers too much and that's hazardous.

    I did start over Bill...as posted I completely reinstalled windows including repartition/formatting the drive. I installed the drivers I had been using for the past 6 months or more (they had worked without any problems). Didn't change any BIOS settings or such and the card had been working fine for several months. It was running in standard mode, not turbo. Yeah, win98SE...on a MSI & PIII system. BIOS is upto date.

    If I have to switch the AGP to 1X after running it at 4X (which realistically is more likely around 2X) for several months, then I would say the card has a problem.

    I actually just posted my comments as a testing suggestion. If it quits locking up after you change this setting you will know the problem is hardware related like mine. I spent several days playing with drivers and such and the system only froze when the nVidia drivers loaded trying to use the cards accelerated features.

    My system just couln't handle it.
