FrontPage 2000

Howdy Ya'll,
I had FP 98 for a while then FP 2000. Then my HD crashed, not related to FP. I bought a new HD, installed OS & all software. I have lost FP 98 cd and so when FP 2000 searches for the files, that I guess it needs to install the upgrade, there not there so I can't install FP 2000. I called MS, they said they couldn't help me! I have NO $, and no telling what the future may bring but at this time it's doubtful that I'll have any extra $ ever!

I know pretty much what some people think of FP, but it's what Iv'e got for now. I am an old lady, broke and in need of help! Can anyone help me solve this problem?

You're in quite a pickle.

What the Frontpage upgrade installer program is doing is simply searching for proof of ownership. It will simply verify that you have an original disc and go on to install FP2000 fresh. It won't install any files from the original.... It just needs to make sure you are actually an original owner.

One way is to become an original owner *AGAIN*. This means buying the ORIGINAL software. Don't fret, though. You can find the older version of Frontpage in eBay all the time, for CHEAP. While I am typing this, one is ending for around $20. Here is a link to one that is currently $10.49 and ends in 16 hours. (Please keep in mind that by the time you read this reply, the auction price may have changed or the auction may have even ended.

Another way (That isn't legal, BTW), would be to borrow a copy from someone you know to allow the upgrade to commence. Again, despite your situation, this method is NOT LEGAL.

Whatever you do, make sure you use FrontPage 98 as the original. Don't be tempted to purchase a super-cheap copy of FP97, because 2000 may not upgrade a product that old. It MIGHT, but I'm not sure that it will. You would have to check Microsoft's website for a list of eligible upgrade titles. (Or check the documentation that came with the FP2000 disc.)

One other thing that I *JUST* thought of:
Check the eligible upgrade list!! SOMETIMES eligible upgrade titles could include previous versions of Office. This means that if you have Office 98, or Office 2000, you *MIGHT* be able to use that disc to install FP2000. It's worth a shot!

I just checked the Microsoft website, and you can use FrontPage 98, 97 or 1.1 as proof of purchase. You can use a CD version OR floppy disk. This means you can scour eBay (or other locations) for the absolutely cheapest price on any previous FrontPage title (As long as it ISN'T the upgrade version itself), and you will be able to install version 2000.
