UDMA problem in WinXP
Something I learned from the Net when my TEAC CDR-W512EB suddenly wouldn't become anything but "PIO only" in Device Manager.
1. Regedit
2. Locate "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEMS\
CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"
3. Select the rellevant IDE channel
4. Change "MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed" Hexadecimal value to "ffffffff" (or Decimal value to "4294967295")
5. Go to the rellevant IDE channel in Device Manager and switch Transfer Mode under the "Advanced Settings" tab back and forth to "DMA if available"
6. DMA mode should now appear active
Worth sticky, BPB ?

Yep - no go. It seems to be a bug in the nForce2 or the "Standard Dual-channel IDE Controller" in Win98.

I believe it's the chipset. I keep seeing more threads about nForce2 and Win98 IDE problems. However, nForce in some cases was suffering from a similar problem and they were fixing it with BIOS updates.

also make sure you're not using a 40 conductor ribbon cable but an 80 conductor ribbon cable
This also applies to some errors that an nforce2 based motherboard might have with the 40 conductor cable.
