Windows xp, New hard drive, size wrong

Ok..Windows XP pro is the os.
My Western Digital HD crashed, got a new one, Doing a new install of XP pro.
Using FAT32, the 80gig HD is only showing about 67gig, I have also noticed a small 8gig partition.

    Whats going on?

How can I get full cap. out of the HD.

i take it you got the os installed? You should prolly delete the 8gb partition in disk mangment and the use something liek partition magic to merge it with the existing 67gb part. This will give you a 75gb partition which sounds right to me. Remember HDD's are never actually their advertised size (which are rounded up), plus the file allocation table etc take up some space

Don't partition it ahead of time. During setup, delete what you have and create a new 36GB partition. You can create more later in Windows.

An 80GB drive has only about 76GB available to use. That 8GB one is the difference.

XP setup cannot create FAT32 partitions greater than 36GB. If that bothers you, you can use this:

Yes, OS installed and running fine.

Would Partition Commander do the job?

    Will I have to re-install?

    Thanks

Yes it would - if it's compatible with XP. Just install it and run it.

    67gig + 8gig = 75 gig

yes that sounds good to me

80 Gig Advertized are never really 80 gig, they are usually 70+ gig

    75 x 1024 = 76.8 Gig

yup that sounds about right to me

that's the number you'll see in DOS after you format

and in WinXP you'll see around 75 Gig

    Thanks AllGamer.

I guess I will leave that little 8gig alone. Call me chicken S^&%.

Because I heard if I combine the 2, I may loose data. Hate to reinstall.

yeah if you don't want to lose data just leave it as is, and make a partition on the remaining space
