    Win2000 or XP?

I've just put together this spec:

    Sapphire Radeon 9700 Non-Pro
    NEC/Mitsubishi DiamondPro 930SB
Athlon XP TBred 1700+ JIUHB DLT3C
    Abit NF7-S rev.2.0
    Antec TruePower 380W
    Western Digital Caviar 80GB 7200RPM 8MB
    Samsung 52x
    Samsung Combo SM468
    Logitech MX500 Mouse
    Logitech Internet Navigator
    Creative Modem V.92
    Twinmos 512MB PC3200 w/Winbond
    Thermaltake Xaser III

I will predominantly be playing high-res games and stuff in delphi, dreamweaver, photoshop.

Would you recommend WinXP & XP Office or Win2000 & Office 2000? I have 2000 discs, but XP is gonna cost me, especially as i want PRO! Is it worth the extra or will i be happy with 2000?

Any thoughts and links would be awesome.

WIN XP is better for games - more stable and configurable.
There isnt much difference in choosing either of the office packages - even office 97 - nobody ever uses all the new gimmicks!!!

You must go PRO - Home has some very annoying faults and isnt built for reliability as well as XP Pro. Depends if you want to network the pc and really use it.

Win 2k, less of the arty farty **** of XP and the stupid front end, also less annoying in that its not always trying to do everythign fo ryou. There are those who say 2k is the faster for gaming, but IMO theyre both as good as each other once you do a little tweaking here and there. Theres a lot of people who say XP is better for older games, IMO ive had much more trouble running older games under XP than i did in 2k's comaptibility tool

Not in my experience - All of the games Ive tried have run faster and the compatability mode works if you know how to use it properly for old games especially.

Guess its just a case of amateur vs professional!!!

I really dont liek the XP compatibility mode, if i use it on older windows games and apply say win98 compatibility the game will run horrendously slowly... put it in 2k comaptibility mode... voila, nice and smooth

if you have 2000, then just try it out. no sense in buying xp, if you already have win2k.

Pro has some capabilities that Home doesn't have, but the statement that Home is less reliable and/or wasn't built with the same level of reliability is pure ****. Home is simply a subset of Pro...that's all.

Im afraid its not **** as you put it.

If you check with most of the professional sites you will find that it is less reliable and it is not built on exactly the same core.

    Get your facts straight!!!

XP Home and XP Pro are really no different for a home user.
Where Pro is really needed and recommended is on a Buisness Network, with a Domain. It has more feauters which make it easier to administer and support for a network admin or support team. They have the same core and programming, however.

IMO, Home will work just fine for home stuff and gaming...

I personally like the very robust plug and play friendliness of XP...mice, joysticks, dig. cameras...very nice PNP...but, I can see where it's "let me do this for you" can get annoying too...

Check out this link for the major differences between Home and Pro (other than the obvious price....)

I have to say windows Xp for sure, I have yet to have any problems with mine, both in gamming and normal use, Windows XP is a great OS if you keep it up to scratch, Drivers etc.

I have my facts straight, you don't. Pro is a superset of Home and Home is a subset of Pro.

They are built on exactly the same core.

Home just simply has some features taken out to justify a price difference between the two, but the core is the same and reliabiltiy is exactly the same. In other words, from a code standpoint, Home is Pro, with certain capabilities taken out.

Microsoft's own site, btw, states that they are supersets and subsets of one another.

    Boys, boys...

Home and Pro are so close to identical, it's not funny. I use both side by side. As far as core stability and basic functionality, they are the very same OS.

I thought they were both based on exactly the same core and same reliability too until the response to a user survey on XP News and after reading reports on W2Knews.

I have no problem in admitting I may be mistaken if indeed these articles and surveys are nonsense.

No need for a bellicose reply or foul language.
