strange port replicator/windows 2k freezing problem - icky
ok im running windows 2000 pro on a portege 3110CT laptop
the computer was running greaaaaaaaaaaat until i decided to test out the lan on the port replicator. plugged the replicator in for the first time..recognized all this stuff...went into docked mode....lan worked on it. awesome.
left the computer for a while and came back to a completely frozen screen - no biggie
took the lan port replicator out and put my pc card lan card in and rebooted...didnt make it into windows...figured it was still in docked mode..so i put the port replicator back on and it booted up fine, so i thought, undocked it and all, restarted...hanging....
it hangs at the same amount of progress on the white bar unless ihave the port replicator in...and even when it does boot it boots wayyyyyyyyyyyyy slower.
also windows is running soooooooooooooooo much slower, services.exe and winmgmt.exe (which there are TWO of now) are taking up tonnnnnnns of CPU time its rediculous it was never like that before. ahh help!!

it's the DHCP
give it a STATIC IP address

why would it do that all of a sudden when i tried the port replicator?
and how exactly do i do that. i know where i can enter it but i dunno what to enter. imagine its gonna bea variant of 192.something.
also, how does that keep it from booting up? cuz its looking for a ip address?

i forgot to mention that the internet connection is running thru another computer and then from that computer is going to this laptop and another computer.
howcome i never had ot configure this before?
ps: the computer sharing the connection is a windows XP Pro machine.

To change IP settings:
Go into the network control panel or the properties of My network places.
On 95 and 98 go to TCP/IP and get its properties. You can change the settings there.
On XP and 2000 go to the LAN Adapter properties and configure tcp/ip.
That should be it.
Make sure your subnet mask matches his for BOTH adapters and the IP address is in the same network and you should be okay.
Example: 192.168.100.10 is his PC
Your PC LAN 1: 192.168.100.11
Your PC LAN 2: 192.168.100.12
Each PC needs its own address.
The subnet mask in this case should be 255.255.255.0

did as was said....
still wont boot up unless the port replicator is in or my lan pc card is NOT plugged in...
i dunno why i should have to manually configure that stuff since i never did before, it always automatically obtained the ip address from the machine sharing the connection.
the network always worked even tho the computer was horribly slow.
bottom line: assigning an ip address hasnt seemed to have fixed anything
ps: im running a network bridge on the windows XP machine ..bridging the other desktop and the laptop (with the problem) so they can both share the internet connection and resources.
