Windows 98 SE over W98 FE
Appreciate some assistance.
Friend has PC (Dell) with W98 first edition.
Is it possible to install W98 second edition (full version) over W98 first edition?
If so, how?
Thanks for your help.

yeah it should be easy and straight forward, since both are 98
i've done it in the past before
should expect no trouble other than asking for the CD Key

I recall that Win98 SE didn't let me install over Win98 the earlier when I did it in 1998.

mainly i've been pissed that the (full version)
won't upgrade ( install over ) an existing setup
if you pay twice as much and get half the usability - it must be BILLWARE

Thanks for the replies and the info.
Owner of PC now wants to install WMe.
If this becomes the case, it will be a full install. Read of too many problems with Me upgrade.

Go for XP mate, ME has too many problems generally not just in the upgrade. It has to be the worst MS OS to date. By the way, if you have a network card in the machine, you would rather have W98 FE rather than SE as there are too many networking issues that came into SE. Trust me, I've had them all at work. Went to 2k and it's sooooo nice!

Thanks for the info, gtaylor.
The machine might too old to support XP. Will give Me a whirl, per the owners request. If it does not work, will opt for something else.

Whilst I have reservations about some MS OS's, especially ME, I wouldn't advise Linux to anyone unless you have a specific use for it. Even then, I wouldn't replace Windows, but have a dual boot machine. Personally I don't like Linux.

If I see a spade, I call it a spade (an English expression meaning that I am a straight talker). For example, I worked in a computer store a few years ago when Imacs were first out and the media publicity machine went into motion. The amount of people that came in wanting an Imac just because it looks nice was incredible. They all left with a PC though, as they genuinely had no idea what they would have bought into. I don't like Macs either by the way.
At the risk of being contraversial, I think Linux's utility lies solely in those who have specific applications for it, such as using Unix at work/educational institution and wanting to transfer work effectively. We used Solaris on sparc stations throughout my university degree, and some installed Linux to work at home. I couldn't be bothered, as I lived 200 yards from the campus so just went in when I needed to. Apart from that, or any other specific use, I see no real point in having it.
Whist MS are not exactly saintly, and I do strongly disagree with some of their policies that have generally left them in heavy law suits, they have done wonders for the desktop and networked computer market. Unfortunately, without them we simply wouldn't be where we are today, and the market could very well be fragmented with several rival OS's all slightly incompatible with each other, meaning buying software was a minefield. Whilst I'm not in love with MS, I do recognise and admire their work in the industry.
There, I've said it (expecting lots of angry comments, wagging fingers and quivering bottom lips of other contributors to this forum).
