Packet Loss Issues
I started playing counter-strike with my new modem, and Actiontec 56k external v.92 Everything worked perfectly, I had around a 250 ping, and I didnt get many lost packets or other problems. Only a few hours later, I went back to play some more. I had not changed any of the settings, but when I went in/on several servers, I had tremendous loss of packets. My ping was still around 300/250, but it didnt matter because I was being clobbered by packet loss. I tryed several different console commands to slow, speed up the rate in which the modem recieves and sends, but none of it helped and I was still loosing packets like crazy. Does anyone have any ideas on this sudden turn for the worse? I have Windows 98 SE.

It could be ISP traffic.
Have you scanned for Spyware?

I had in fact been using an older version of ad-aware, but I downloaded the one I found with your link. It found 18 spyware files. So i launched up CS and I was still dropping packets like crazy. Any other ideas?

It could be anything. Check your phone line for noise.

ok, I pressed 1 and listened (I think thats how you check for noise I'm not sure). I heard a rustling type sound, crackling like.

The rustling sound is what's messing you up. Get the telco out there.

do you know if it will cost anything?

Not unless the problem is inside the house. Otherwise it's a provided service.
