the mouse is just random cheap 5 button optical

Update your BIOS first. Disable Standby/Hibernation in Power Options (Windows).

Carefully unplug the USB modem, coil the wires neatly, pack up the power adapter and throw it out the freakin' window! USB networking sux! Tell those cheap so-and-sos at the telco that you want E-t-h-e-r-n-e-t. After you do, you'll feel better and your troubles will be over!

Open System Information (MSINFO32.EXE) and navigate to Hardware Resources > IRQs. Click anywhere in the right pane and then press CTRL-A and then CTRL-C. You have copied that data to the clipboard. Paste that data in a reply here.

theres no power adapter... it draws all power from usb

its adsl internet - broadband not networking, and ive already replaced it after it stopped me booting

i have the latest bios already and it has no problems going into/out of hibernation/standby

Believe me - a modem is a networking device. USB is no good at it. It's unstable and stupid. A bus-powered modem is even worse. All of your problems originate here - trust me.

I'm sending you to my main crib for advice - just so you know that I'm good at this USB stuff.

I just told you. Get rid of the USB modem. Alternately, you could try installing a USB adapter card and plugging the modem in there:

Have you read the SiS USB tips? Have you applied them to your setup?

I had a similar problem once, but it was with a usb camera i was using at the time. try using a usb mouse; if the kb locks up but the mouse keeps going fine, run the comp without the modem. and go with an ethernet modem. besides being better, it'll let you hook up to a broadband router and share your connection :P this will prove BPB right i'm 99% sure.

in north america ( canada for sure ) practically ALL high speed is with external modems connected by ethernet ( the way god intended )

a built-in pci card DSL modem should be fine and i've installed one

i think there are a few usb connected external modems ( the devils work ) on this continent
but unfortunately europe ( britain for sure ) is plagued with them

usb is fine for a keyboard or mouse ( they run about a 100 times slower than high speed internet

whatever your high speed provider has

one disadvantage of not leasing is that you're not guaranteed compatablity if you move

when you buy or lease the equipment from them you have that assurance it'll work with their system

who makes the high speed equipment you have now ??
