    Making CD drive open up

A friend of mine told me a guy in a chat room of hers can make her CD drive open. She thinks this is really funny.
My question is, how did he do this? I told her to be careful that he might have caused her to download something so he could have gotten control of her PC. Or am I being paranoid?

If ActiveX controls are enabled in Internet Explorer (most are) and you visit a web page with a script telling the CD drives to open, they will. This is essentially a "cheap magician's trick" and shouldn't be taken seriously. More serious matters are handled well by IE's security features.

That could be a trojan. Once upon a time, when I got my first computer and everything was new to me, I used to play with trojans and most of them had "the power" to open other people's cd-rom drivers.

I agree, to be on the Safe Side, i'd suggest your friend to Scan her computer with a new and updated AntiVirus software, to make sure it was not a trojan
