    Is an I/O shield essential?

    Building a pc but the mobo or case didn't come with i/o shields. I' ve mounted the mobo in the case, all the i/o ports fit but can this cause problems with grounding? Thanks for any input.

    ditto, when I built my old machine - it never had an IO sheild on - it's an old PII 300....

    Yep, mine works fine without one too. The dust comment is spot on though - maybe I should just learn to vacuum more often

    I found the I/O shield that came with the epox 8rda+ to be a bloody mystery when i was trying to install it, in the end i just pulled off most of the metal cut outs with my hands (cut my fingers to pieces :o) and pushed it in as best i could... bloody stupid thing

    The metal on the outside of the ports, etc is purposely isolated (it would be idiotic engineering if it weren't), so grounding -- touching the case -- isn't an issue.
