Check the drivers for the sound card, then check the resource assignments (IRQ's and DMA's).

Glad to see you finally have the modem fixed up.
Have you check the irq/dma per Sterling_Aug.?

Have you tried wiggling your speaker wires.?

Is your dma enabled for your hard drive.?

After everthing has failed, you can try another fresh install but this time without the modem in the machine.Without doing any win98 updates ,you try out your sound system and then then one thing at a time, you build up the sytem.

Was the problem there before your format.?
