    Eric,

You've got to read this stuff! This is where Windows is going in the VERY near future.
    Read the parts entitled:
    The Microsoft "Road Ahead"
    and
    Limiting your Choices
Now that you are dependant on your pc M$ is going to make you pay and pay and pay. You will be forced to use their OS and only programs they approve of.

I read the entire article in the first link, took about 3 hours. WOW !!! Talk about going through Bill's dirty laundry.

It is a version of Debian Linux that runs off a cd. You d/l an iso file, burn it to a cd and then boot your machine to the cd. That is it. There is no installation. You can now run Linux from the cd without touching your HD at all. It will run in a pc that doesn't even have a HD. It has an office program, web browser and lots of other stuff. One of these days Linux is going to get good enough to compete in the consumer market. Add that to what Bill is doing and things will change.

Some of the new 3.2 versions seem to default to German language. To correct this when it says BOOT______
    type in: knoppix lang=us
hit enter and it will run in english.
I'm running Knoppix 3.2 to post this right now. I like it much better than the SuSE live eval that I have tried. Yes, it would be good for beginners to try because you do not have to dedicate hardware or disk space.
I booted up on it on our family's windows PC. I told them I erased windows for good. They knew I was kidding, but one day maybe I will.

Forgot to mention how easy it was to run. As Elroy mentioned, just type 'knoppix lang=us' at the boot prompt. In my case, I entered 'knoppix lang=us wheelmouse desktop=kde' . This adds support for a wheel mouse, and sets the graphical environment to use the kde desktop. Anyone who can use win95 can figure out the kde desktop.

To get online, a single click on 'Use DHCP' was all I needed to get to the Internet . Too easy...

It's funny how in the article they spoke of the DOJ letting M$ walking away with little more than a slap on the hand.
What you need to realize is that some kind of deal had to be struck in order for M$ to be able to walk away like that. Oh you hear talk of troubles here and there, but thats just to keep the GP off guard.
Just like when a small time drug dealer is caught with triffling amount of narcotics the prosecuter is quick to cut a deal if the little guy rats out some bigger guys. Basically if you have something bigger to offer the powers that be will forgive the errs of your ways.
Now basically Bill Gates does have something bigger to offer. That being the privacy and security of every person using a Microsoft OS, or application.
Would I put it past Bill to be a major cheese eater ?, no.
