Something is interrupting my performance
I have attempted to defragment my computer, but it doesn't get past 10% completed.
There is something obviously wrong with the system, as the hour glass pops on periodically and the hard-drive light comes on.
Cany anyone help?

You probably have to many backround tasks running. look at the bottum right on the tool bar, see how much is running. Also try ctr-alt-delete and see what processes are running. you need as few as posible to defrag.

What OS do you have? On my Windows 98 box I sit at 10% for a long time and jump to 50-60% after a while.
You could disable your screen saver and any backgroud programs. If anything accesses the drive Defrag will restart.
Use Task Manger to kill any unneeded app that you can not exit manually. Close all the apps you can close manually and restart after the defrag to get them back.

Check and make sure you have nothing running in the background. Anything running in the background will stop the program from running. I have found that even mouse software running will make it restart.

Two tips,
1. If your running W9x /ME then defrag in safemode.
2. Better yet, use a better defrag utility ,
Diskeeper Lite , freeware.

Defrag in safemode, and if your on permanant internet connection, such as cable/ISDN/ADSL then totally unplug it from the machine whilst defragging

if you dont want to reboot to safe mode to defrag, you can always close out everything with task manager EXCEPT!!! explorer and systray

Can use third party ute McAfee ofc, Norton syswerks etc, for faster defrag, and more options, when you do be sure to specify swap file optimized and placed on the outer, fastest perimeter of hdplatter.
To use m$ native ute, make sure to disable all screen savers, sleep modes, virus, fw etc. Hust give it the 3 finger vulcan nerve pinch and one by one close all progs EXCEPT exp/systray
