Drivers, drivers, drivers!
If you do not have the correct drivers for the onboard to work, then switch back to the one the cable company gave you.

Assuming you have installed the drivers for your onboard NIC properly, then...
All NICs have a unique identfier assigned to them called the MAC address. Sometimes the provider (especially cable 'net providers) assign your IP address to a specific hardware MAC address.
If you change devices, your provider may not permit you to login/authenticate to your IP since the new device has a different MAC address.
There are at least two ways to handle this situation:
1) you can have the new device "clone" the identity of the original device's MAC address, or
2) you can contact the provider and explain the situation, they can clear/reassign to a new MAC address after you logoff, with your next logon. (would be same if the modem they sent you failed and had to be replaced, for example)
