I was given a pc which has a dual operating(win 2000pro,winxp pro) system on it.I don't like the win2000 pro is there a safe way to remove it without, harming the winxp installaton. The pc is an Amd 500 mgz. Thanks.

How are the two laid out? If Win2K Pro is on the last partition, you can simply format that drive and then edit out the path for it in the BOOT.INI file. To do this in WinXP, go to System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery and click the Edit button.

If Win2K is on C or D and mounted before WinXP, you still edit the BOOT.INI file, but you cannot format C! If you do, WinXP's bootfiles will go bye-bye too. You would then delete the WINNT folder. You must find out if programs that run in XP are actually installed on the Win2K partition. It's not easy to do. If nothing for XP is on that partition, you can delete all folders, but leave the loose files! Those are the bootfiles. Now you can use Partition Magic or Partition Resizer to shrink the Win2K partition and expand the WinXP partition down to use up the space.

The easiest way to tell is to open the C drive and look. If there's a Windows and a WINNT folder, they are both on the same partition. As long as WinXP is the default OS, you can delete the WINNT folder and edit the BOOT.INI and you'll be golden.

Use the System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery applet to set default and timeout.

Sorry for being so green, but what do you mean by 'timeout"?
