Can mobo boot to bios w/o processor?

Well recently I just bought a Abit BL7 motherboard brand new from a reseller and from another store I bought a Celeron 2.0ghz. Now with the motherboard, I get absolutly no responce when i turn it on, everythign is where it should be and I have the right pwoer supply. Well I turn on the motherboard and everythign else turns on cept the motherboard, it doesn't boot up at all, and theres a LED display on it for the POST code and it just displays 00 all the time. At first I thought it was the celeron, I took it out and the same thign happened.

So what i'm getting to is, can a board boot up to the bios without a processor?? I just want to know whats malfunctioning, the board or the chip, thnx

You Know What They Say About Assume

Sounds like you want to know if you should return/exchange the CPU or MoBo or both.

The chances are so close to 50/50 that it's really hard to say. On one hand, if it's the MoBo, it could have toasted the CPU. On the other hand, if the CPU is bad you're in much the same boat. You also don't want to inconvenience one or the other retailers unless you are sure which product is bad.

After all efforts fail, to include Abit's on-line help, I would ask the MoBo's retailer to test the board first. If they cannot test it w/o CPU, try the vendor for the CPU.

BTW: Hats off to you for thinking about the retailers.

You must have a processor in a mainboard for it to boot the board. The processor actually connects and finishes several of the power buses in the PC. With out the processor it is like having a broken lead in any circuit board.

The board will take power and start to a point but does not complete post without the processor so you can not access the BIOS.

tried it once. Got a message on the screen that said :

"Please insert CPU, press any key to continue."

That's as far as it would go.

Thnx, I thought there would at least be some kind of error beep, but nothing, same thing happened when there WAS a processor in it, absolutly nothing.

Sounds like you have the dreaded no post problem.

If the fans spin then most likely it's the MoBo. If they don't then I'd put my money on the CPU.

There are always exceptions BUT I've had lots of bad boards and never had a single bad cpu. So I would be looking at the board first. Either try the cpu in a friends board or borrow a cpu to try in your board. Also if the board is mounted in the case take it out and try it that way. Also double check all the connections, then double check them again.
