    Boot Problem

After loading Windows 98 on my new hard drive, the computer freezes on the "Add New Hardware Wizard": ALi PCI to USB Open Host Controller. I have no keyboard or mouse control. I do have use of the keyboard in Safe Mode though.

I'm no expert, but I did a mem /d and this is what came up. Something doesn't look right.

Type of Memory Total Used Free

    Conventional 654,336 89,456 564,880

    Upper 0 0 0

    Reserved 0 0 0

    Extended (XMS) 15,728,640 15,7228,640 0

    Any help would be appreciated.

    2 things you can do

    1) re-install 98 on top of the old one

    or

    2) go back into Safe Mode and remove EVERYTHING inside the Device Manager Screen

Make sure that USB is enabled in BIOS setup and that nothing is connected to the USB port. Add USB devices after setup is complete.

If you still have trouble, disable USB in BIOS and use a PCI USB adapter card instead. ALi host controllers are **** anyway.

in bios there might be a ( usb keyboard ) setting that should be enabled also
you are probably best of to borrow a non-usb keyand mouse to get windows installes first
then do all the windows updates ? before trying to do any usb

Many thanks to BipolarBill. That did the trick. There was a setting for enable, disable and auto. It was already on enable, so I put it on auto, and it booted with no problems.
