Linux Mandrake 9.0 and Win 98.

1st off, how big are your hard-drives ?. 4 Mb each HUH ?. Or did you mean 4 Gb HDD.
Either way hit F1 when the install splash comes up and type in vgalo, hit enter. then try your install. But if you have really small hard drives (4Mb) you'll be better off with DOS.

I just downloaded Mandrake 9 disks 1 and 2 from linuxiso.org.

When I say "just" I mean I used "Flashget" download manager to handle the 60 hours PER DISK, download over my dial-up connection in multiple sessions.

I did have to download the first disk twice because the first image was corrupted somehow, but they do both install now.

I'm running a dual boot on an old Aptiva with an AMD K6 350mHz

I want to compile and install ltmodem drivers but I can't find the kernel headers on the disks. The only driver rpms ar for kernel 2.18 and MDK installs with 2.19.??.

Mandrake has said that the headers listed are for the compiler, and have "nothing to do with the kernel" but they also say that it comes with "everything for development" so where are the headers for the pre-compiled kernel? or the source for that matter?

I've not downloaded disk 3 because I was under the assumption that it's all language stuff, and I really don't want to invest another 60 hours just to find out.

If anyone who has disk 3 could check the rpm lists and post what is not language related, I'd appreciate it.

I pretty much only have win98 loaded at this time to use the web, and do taxes. I still can't get linux to work with my win-modem, after months of e-mails with the ltmodem authors. I've also not found a tax, or decent home accounting software package for linux yet.

I found an answer to my own question. Rather than list the extensive number of rpms on disk 3 here, check out the lindex of
http://ftp.via.ecp.fr/mandrake/9.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS3/

The source for the Mandrake kernel 2.4.19-16mdk is there, though the headers for the pre-compiled kernel are not. Maybe I can find the pre-compiled config file. Or I'll recompile a custom kernel, which is probably what I should do anyway.
